The normal aging process results in a reduction of lip volume and projection of the red (vermillion) portion. A variety of materials have been used to fill and restore lip volume including injection of natural materials like collagen or fat, placement of dermal (deep skin) and facial grafts s/s material, and prosthetic filler materials such as Gore-tex and Alloderm.
Dermis Grafting
Dermis Grafting is a technique used to enhance and enlarge the size of your lips. A piece of tissue is borrowed from somewhere in your body, and is grafted into one or both of your lips. Fascia (the covering of a muscle) or dermis (bottom layer of skin) are both excellent sources of tissue. The doctor will discuss the alternatives and assist in choosing the best source for you. Although the procedure can be done with local anesthesia, the use of sedation plus local or general anesthesia will make the operation much easier to tolerate. The lips are noticeably swollen for about 2 weeks. The sutures will be removed in a week. Lip sensation is usually normal after healing.
Fat Grafting
Fat grafting is another technique that is used to enhance and enlarge the size of your lips. The patient’s own fat is collected from another area of the body and is re-injected into the desired area of improvement. The technique used for this procedure allows the patient to retain a longer lasting result. This procedure can be done in an outpatient setting under a local anesthesia or a local anesthesia with sedation. It can also be performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures
Your body will absorb approximately 50% of what is transferred over time therefore you may require an additional procedure(s). If another procedure is desired you will need to wait at least 4 months before attempting to re-inject the area.
The treated areas usually look presentable within 7-14 days after the procedure. The donor area will remain somewhat tender and sore for approximately 10-14 days. You may have bruising and swelling in the donor site as well.
