What is the result achieved with abdominoplasty?
A smoother, flatter and tighter abdomen. The following pictures are an example of an extended incision, not a standard incision. The incision varies with patient individuality.

What can be expected during the procedure?
An incision just above the pubic area is used to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. Skin is separated from the abdominal wall all the way up to the ribs. A large skin flap is lifted to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. The surgeon then draws underlying muscle and tissues together and stitches them, thereby narrowing the waistline and strengthening the abdominal wall. Abdominal skin is drawn down and excess is removed. With complete abdominoplasty, a new opening is cut for the navel. The result following surgery is a flatter, trimmer abdomen. Scars are permanent but will fade with time.

After the surgery?
Following the surgery it is best to have someone assist you with your daily activities for several days following surgery. You may need to spend your time resting, as you may feel fatigued. You can shower as soon as dressings are removed and comfort permits. You will need to avoid any aerobic or strenuous exercise for four weeks. Carrying or lifting heavy objects is limited for four to six weeks. If you work outside of the home, you may be able to return to work after two weeks with the understanding that you will still have discomfort with motion and fatigue. This depends on your job duties and your energy level. Your surgeon will discuss this with you your initial consultation.
