The shape and size of the breast is often a concern for women. As a woman matures, she will begin to notice that the shape and fullness of the breasts have changed. Sagging breasts can be the result of simple aging, significant weight loss, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. The most common response to this condition is electing to have a breast lift or mastopexy. As with any aesthetic or cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, the surgery itself will assist in altering the shape and size of the breast but it is not designed as a life long alteration.

Candidate for Breast Lift
A woman who has completed her pregnancies and has stopped nursing her youngest child often considers a breast lift procedure. If you elect to have a breast lift it will not interfere or hamper your ability to become pregnant or to deliver a healthy child. The effects of pregnancy, nursing, and gravity are loss of skin elasticity and volume of breast tissue. An additional pregnancy after a mastopexy procedure can produce future loss of elasticity and volume. The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy patients with realistic expectations of what the surgery will accomplish. As with all aesthetic procedures, it is recommended that you do not smoke, as smoking will cause delayed healing.

Women who desire a breast lift may not have the surgery for at least 12 months after they have stopped breast feeding.

Planning your Mastopexy
It is important to understand that the breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure. With any surgery, there is always risk of complication or reaction to anesthesia. Following your surgeon's advice before and after your procedure can reduce your risks significantly.

During your consultation, you will consider several aesthetic issues:
  • What breast size is your goal?
  • What is the condition of your skin?
  • Is an implant advisable?
  • What position do you want the nipple and areola (they will be moved higher during the procedure)

Your surgery will be performed either in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center. Sando Jones Aker Cosmetic Plastic Surgery only performs procedures in facilities that are licensed or certified.

The mastopexy will take from two to three hours depending on your size. Your surgeon will have explained where the incisions are to be made in advance. The incisions will outline where the excess skin is to be removed and where the nipple and areola are to be placed. In some patients an implant can be placed under the breast tissue or muscle to enhance the volume and shape of the breast.

You should make arrangements for someone to drive you to the surgery and take you back home.

What are the fees?
A breast lift can range from $4800 to $6400 depending on the individual. This range includes the surgeon, facility and anesthesia fees. There are times when a patient may need a breast lift with implants. In this case the fee would increase.
